toil, hard work hardship, distress, trouble, Hes., Trag.: pl. toils, troubles, hardships, Trag.; τέκνων for children, Eur. -μόχθος and πόνος are both used in the sense of hardship, distress; yet this notion belongs properly to μόχθος, while πόνος is properly work, Lat. labor (from πένομαι, πένης, the poor man's lot).
