φῦλον 1 φύω

I.a race, tribe, class of men, Hom., etc.; oft. in pl. hosts, swarms, also of other animals, swarms of gnats, Il.; φῦλον ὀρνίθων the race of birds, Soph.
2.a sex, Hes.; τὸ θῆλυ, τὸ ἄρρεν φ. Xen.
II.in closer sense, a race of people, a nation, φῦλα Πελασγῶν Il.; κελαινὸν φ., of the Aethiopians, Aesch., etc.
III.more closely still, = φυλή II. 1, a clan or tribe of men acc. to blood or descent, κατὰ φῦλα Il.
