ὑπερφέρω ,
A.bear or carry over, “ὑ. τὸν ἰσθμὸν τὰς ναῦς” Th.3.81, cf. 15,87:—Pass., [“νῆες] ὑπερενεχθεῖσαι τὸν ἰσθμόν” Id.4.8; “ὑπερενεχθῆναι τὰς δίνας” D.H.3.56; νυκτὸς ὑπερφέρεσθαι (sc. τὸν Ταῦρον) Plu.2.510b; ὑ. ὑπὲρ . . X.Oec.18.7: c. gen., to be transferred from, “τὰς τῶν . . ζῴων διαφορὰς μὴ δυναμένας ὑπερενεχθῆναι τῶν κατὰ φύσιν τόπων” Ptol.Geog.1.12.2.
II. mostly intr., to be prominent, stand out, Plu.2.591c.
2. metaph., surpass, excel, have the advantage over, τινός τινι one in a thing, “ῥόδα ὀδμῇ ὑπερφέροντα τῶν ἄλλων” Hdt.8.138, cf. 9.96, Ar.Eq.584 (lyr.), Th.1.81: c. gen. only, “τέχνη τέχνης ὑπερφέρουσα” S.OT381, cf. X.Lac.15.8: c. dat. modi only, “κάλλεϊ καὶ ἀρετῇ μέγα ὑ.” Hdt.8.144, cf. 4.74, E.Hec.268; “πλούτῳ” X.Lac.15.3.
b. sts. c. acc. pro gen., “ὑπερφέρεις τόλμῃ τε τόλμαν καὶ λόγῳ χρηστῷ λόγον” E.Heracl.554; “ὑ. τὴν ἀνθρωπίνην φύσιν” Isoc.4.60; “μεγέθει καὶ ῥώμῃ πάντας” Plu.Rom.7.
c. abs., τοῦθ᾽ ὑπερφέρει has this pre-eminence, S.OC1007 (s. v. l.); “πολὺ ὑπερενεγκεῖν” X.Mem.3.5.13.
d. part., in honorific expressions, “ἡ σὴ -φέρουσα ἐξουσία” PSI4.292.5 (iii A. D.), etc.
