ῥιπή 1 ῥίπτω

1.the swing or force with which anything is thrown, Lat. impetus, αἰγανέης ῥιπή the flight of a javelin, Il.; ῥιπὴ Βορέαο the sweep or rush of the N. wind, id=Il.; ῥιπὴ Διόθεν, of a storm, Aesch.; ἐννυχιᾶν ἀπὸ ῥιπᾶν prob. means from the quarter of the night storms, i.e. from the North, Soph.; . πυρός the rush of fire, Il.
2.. πτερύγων a flapping of wings, Aesch.; of the buzz of a gnat's wing, id=Aesch.; of quivering light, ῥιπαὶ ἄστρων Soph.; of any rapid movement, . ποδῶν Eur.; ἐν ῥιπῇ ὀφθαλμοῦ in the twinkling of an eye, NTest.
