Signia
Now Segni. A town in Latium on the east side of the Volscian Mountains, founded by
Tarquinius Priscus. It was celebrated for its temple of Iupiter Urius, for its astringent wine
(
Mart.xiii. 116), for its pears, and for a particular kind of
tessellated pavement for the floors of houses, called
opus Signinum. There
still remains a gate of cyclopean structure, besides parts of the polygonal walls of the
ancient city.
