ἑκατόμ-βη (βοῦς): hecatomb; properly, ‘sacrifice of a hundred oxen,’ but the number is a round one, as the hecatombs mentioned always contain less than 100 head; hence for ‘sacrifice’ generally, Il. 2.321, etc.
