Pinzon, Vincent Yañez 1460-1524

Navigator; born in Palos de Moguer, Spain, about 1460; brother of Martin Alonzo Pinzon; commanded the Nina in the first voyage of Columbus (1492); in 1499 led an expedition composed of four caravels, which sailed from Palos in December, and first saw the continent of South America at Cape Augustine, Brazil. There he took possession of the country in the name of the crown of Castile. Sailing northward, he explored the coasts of Brazil, and discovered and named the River Amazon. He lost two or three of his ships on the homeward voyage. He died at his birthplace about 1524.
