General order no. 38.
headquarters Pender's Brigade, May 13, 1863..
Upon resuming command of the brigade, it affords me great pleasure to express to you my high appreciation of your conduct and services in the late battle of Chancellorsville.
Troops could not have fought better or more gallantly, opposing successfully such fearful odds, strongly posted and offering stubborn resistance, as evidenced by your loss, greater than that of any brigade in the army in proportion to numbers engaged.
I may be exacting, but in this instance you may rest assured that I am perfectly satisfied.
I am proud to say that your services are known and appreciated by those higher in command than myself. * * *
[Signed] W. D. Pender, Brigadier-General.
