Galena, Jo Daviess County, Illinois

a city of 10,000 pop., on Fevre River, 6 miles from its entrance into the Mississippi. Very extensive lead mines are found in this vicinity. The Fevre River is navigable to this point, and steamboats make regular trips from here to various points up and down the Mississippi. Connected to Chicago by the Western Union Railroad.
