When the Civil War broke out he resigned from the National army and entered that of the Confederates; was promoted on the field to the rank of brigadier-general by Jefferson Davis for gallant service, and later attained to that of majorgeneral.
He died in Baltimore, Md., Feb. 21, 1871.
