Davis, Varina Anne Jefferson, 1864-1898
author; second daughter of Jefferson Davis; born in Richmond, Va., June 27, 1864; known popularly in the South as the Daughter of the Confederacy.
Her childhood was mostly spent abroad, and for several years she devoted herself to literature.
Her works include An Irish knight of the nineteenth century; Sketch of the life of Robert Emmet; The veiled Doctor; Foreign education for American girls; and A romance of summer seas.
She died at Narraganset Pier, R. I., Sept. 18, 1898.

Derry, Joseph T., 1841-
Author; born in Milledgeville, Ga., Dec. 13, 1841; graduated at Emory College in 1860; enlisted in the Oglethorpe Infantry in January, 1861, and with his company joined the Confederate army, March 18, 1861; served throughout the war, participating in the West Virginia, the Tennessee, and the Atlanta campaigns, being taken prisoner at the battle of Kenesaw Mountain, June 27, 1864.
Among his works are a School history of the United States; History of Georgia; and the volume on Georgia in the Confederate military history of which Gen. Clement A. Evans is editor.

Harker, Charles G. 1837-
Military officer; born in Swedesboro, N. J., Dec. 2, 1837: graduated at West Point in 1858, and in the fall of 1861 was colonel of Ohio volunteers.
He was made brigadier-general in September, 1863.
He did good service in Tennessee and Georgia, especially in the battle of Shiloh, the siege of Corinth, the battles of Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge.
He commanded a brigade under General Howard in the Georgia campaign, and distinguished himself at Resaca.
He was killed near Kenesaw Mountain, June 27, 1864.
