The Troops in both forts were under the command of Major W S. G. Andrews, of Goldsboro'. The attack was made on Wednesday morning at eight o'clock, and kept up till eleven o'clock, A. M., on Thursday. Eleven of the enemy's vessels were engaged in the bombardment. Fort Clark was captured first, and Fort Hatteras at the time named above as that of the close of the cannonade. From six to eight hundred prisoners were taken by the enemy. Among them is Col. Martin, Major Andrews and Commodore Barron, son of the celebrated Commodore of that name. Some eght or ten escaped. Of the killed and wounded we have no account at this time. For this disastrous result somebody is to blame. Who that somebody is must remain a subject for future inquiry. In the meantime let us not hastily censure any of those engaged in the arrangement or execution of this affair. In ignorance of the truth, we may censure the bravest and the best.
