At present he holds the office of clerk of the board of commissioners of Richland county. By his marriage, in 1878, to Joanna Carter, he has one child: Emily. Captain James T. Douglass Captain James T. Douglass, of Union county, one of the most extensive and prosperous planters of the State, was in her days of trial one of the most devoted soldiers who defended her cause and maintained her honor in the armies of the Confederacy. He was born in Union county, in 1838, a son of Dr. George Douglass, a prominent physician whose father was a native of Aberdeen, Scotland, and was educated at Mount Zion college, the South Carolina college and Chapel Hill university, with graduation by the latter in 1860. Early in 1861 he enlisted in the company of Captain Giles, Fifth South Carolina infantry, and was soon promoted to orderly sergeant. He participated in the first battle of Manassas, and continued on duty as orderly until the reorganization, when Captain Giles became colonel, and h
