Major Wheat is a well-known filibuster. He was killed by a sergeant of the Second New Hampshire regiment, while in advance of his battalion, leading them on to the charge, after which they fled in every direction. Gen. Smith is a cadet of 1841, and served with distinction in the Mexican war. Col.
