Manson, who was in command of the Federal army before General Nelson arrived, and who commenced the battle, now pushed of artillery and all their wagon trains were captured by the Confederates. According to the official reports the Union force engaged consisted of Manson's and Cruft's brigades, eight regiments and two detachments of infantry, one regiment and a battalion of cavalry and two batteries of artillery, all new troops who had only been mustered into service a few days.
