Mr. Carter, of Loudon, proposed to amend the first section by inserting a clause submitting the action of the Convention to the people for their adoption or rejection, &c.
Mr. Douglass opposed the amendment, and at the close of his remarks he read a dispatch from Washington, wh
e sake of harmony, let us keep out of it the submissionists and red-hot fire eaters, and let us have the hard-sense and good-thinking men of the State to represent us.
