Agriculturist; born in Adams, N. Y., April 22, 1832; graduated at Union College in 1854; removed to Nebraska City; was the originator of Arbor day (q. v.); acting governor of Nebraska in 1858; and was appointed Secretary of the Department of Agriculture in 1893.
