received $2550; first lieutenants on duty at sea received $1500 a year, and the same when on other duty. When on leave or awaiting orders they received $1200 a year. Second lieutenants when on duty at sea received $1200 a year, and when on leave or on other duty received $1000. Surgeons on duty at sea received $2200 and when on other duty $2000 a year. At Richmond, very early in the struggle, a naval school was established by Secretary Mallory and placed under the command of Lieutenant William H. Parker, a former officer of the United States navy, who, at the outbreak of the war, had already seen twenty years of service. In July, 1863, the steamship Patrick Henry, then at Richmond, was converted into a school-ship. She was ordered to remain at anchor off Drewry's Bluff in the James River to lend assistance, if necessary, to the defense of the capital. N., has left so vivid a description of this new departure in naval constructionfrom Norfolk, had steered very badly. t well acquainted with the history of our civil war will find ample proof of my statements on file in the Navy Department at Washington, as also by reference to Admirals Porter and S. P. Lee, and Commander W. B. Cushing, United States Navy, for the fact that an efficient system of torpedo defences did exist on the James river, during the war, and to the Hon. S. R. Mallory; Captain J. M. Brooke, inventor of the Merrimac, the Brooke Gun, and the deep-sea sounding apparatus; and also to Captain Wm. H. Parker, formerly Superintendent of the Confederate Naval School, that I organized and commanded these defences, and was the first to make them successful. , in February, 1862, reaching Beaufort late in the same month. He was at once commissioned a master's mate in the Confederate navy, and was ordered to report to Commodore Forrest at Richmond. Being assigned to the gunboat Beaufort, under Lieut. W. H. Parker, at Norfolk, he took part in the attempt to force the Monitor to action April 11th. Subsequently at Richmond he was assigned to duty on a floating battery on the James river, but desiring more active service resigned his commission in thehting. In the fall of 1866 he began the practice of law at Yorkville, in which he has been very successful. In 1881 he was appointed on the commission to revise and codify the statutes of the State, his associates being Judge Simonton and William H. Parker. Being elected to the legislature in 1882 he served with credit as a member of the judiciary committee. He holds the rank of commander of the camp of United Confederate veterans at Yorkville, of which he was one of the organizers. By his

The gold and silver in the Confederate States Treasury. What became of it. The account of Captain William H. Parker, Confederate States Navy, who had it in charge in its transportation South. To the Editor of the Dispatch: So many incorrect statements have appeared in the public prints from time to time concerning the preservation and disposition of the Confederate treasure, that a true and circumstantial account of where it was from April 2, 1865, to May 2, 1865, may prove it looked black for him. Fortunately he caught the main sheet, which was trailing overboard, and was hauled in. It was providential, for upon Wood depended the safety of the entire party. After suffering much from hunger and thirst they arrived at Matanzas (I think) and were kindly cared for by the Spanish authorities. from whom they received most respectful attention as soon as they made themselves known.
