He remained in this position, performing every duty with the fidelity and zeal for which he was distinguished, until the final surrender in 1865. The battles in which he was engaged proved him a capable officer, cool and undaunted in danger, and skillful in the handling of his men. After the end of the war he settled down to the quiet life of a farmer, planting in Calhoun and Marengo counties. His wife was a daughter of Col. Henry A. Rutledge of Talladega, Ala., a descendant of the celebrated South Carolina family of that name. Brigadier-General William Henry Forney, brother of Gen. John H. Forney, was born at Lincolnton, N. C., November 9, 1823. In 1835 he went with his parents to Calhoun county, Ala. Here he received his elementary education, and then entered the university of Alabama, where he was graduated in 1844. He was studying law with his brother, D. P. Forney, in Jacksonville, when youthful and patriotic ze
