er by a fire engine. Capt, Slocum, of brig Sarah Starr, died on the 29th ult., on the passage from Wilmington, N. C., for Havana. The proclamation of Gov. Hicks, appointing Thursday, 29th inst., as a "Holiday of Thanksgiving and Prayer," is published. Lieut. H. H. Rhodes, late U. S. N., of Leesburg, Va., died on the steamer Planet, near Vicksburg, Miss., on the 3d inst. Lloyd N. Rogers, late owner of the Druid Hill Park, at Baltimore, died there on the 12th instant. Mr. Thomas Hessey, a respected citizen of Shepherdstown, Va., died on the 2d instant, while on a visit to Danville, III. Judge Douglas left Mobile on the day of the Presidential election for New Orleans. Mrs. D. accompanied him. A child of Q. F. Morris was drowned in Anthony's Creek, Greenbrier county, Va., on the 3d inst. The subscription in Virginia to Allegheny College, so far, is $27,000. Jonah Purcell's residence, in London co. Va., was destroyed by fire on the 5th inst.
