other ironclad steamer just completed at Richmond, equal, they say, if not superior, to the Merrimac. She is reported to be launched and ready to sail down the James river, to unite with the Virginia. I give you this statement as coming to me through sources in which I place considerable reliance, as I know the parties, and am cosition which they have held since the war began. With their iron clad sea monster, the Merrimac, and her iron-cased satellites, the rebels not only command the James river on the one side, but they render York, on the other side of the Peninsula, somewhat unsafe to our wooden transports and gunboats. All this results from the conhe remains intact and afloat, is worth an army of fifty thousand men in the defence of Yorktown, preventing, as she does, any naval diversion on our part in the James river in support of General McClellan.
