estate, of all his stock. Phis of the enemy on Thursday. A member of Stuart's Cavalry, who left the scene of operations on Thursday afternoon, informs us that the mass of the diminished army was then at Westover, on the north side of James river, some thirteen miles below City Point. McClellan's headquarters were at Berkeley. There were none of the enemy at Shirley. Our informant ascended a bluff, and saw twenty five Federal transports, and on Wednesday another gentleman counted 15ng greatly worsted in the series of battles in which he had engaged, and that the men for the most part were heartily tired of the war. He stated, however, that he was not a deserter; but that he had heard Burnside was on the south bank of the James river, and he came over for the purpose of getting something to eat, and, if possible, a little sleep — both of which essentials he represented himself as standing greatly in need of. Our pickets, commiserating his condition, gave him food and raime
Absconded Slave--$25 reward. --Left my place on James river, upper end of Henrico county, on Sunday last, June, 1862, without any cause, my Servant Man, Cornelius, commonly called Duck. He is about 25 years of age, rather small well made, black, good teeth, likely, and no marks; about 5 feet 7 inches high. He is no doubt lurking about Richmond or endeavoring employment as servant in some of the camps, having many acquaintances among the servants in Richmond, out in no other place. For his safe delivery to Blair & Chamberlayne, or placed in jail so they get him, they will pay the above reward. jy 4--6t John Wickham.
One hundred dollars reward. --The above reward will be paid for a negro woman by the name of Winney Morton, who ran off on Thursday morning, 3d of July. She is 5 feet high, stout built, jet black, talks very lady like, but looks grum. She had on a hood bonnet, head tied up with a black silk handkerchief. She has a sister living in Manchester, and a husband waiting upon Captain Sales in the army, and owned by Sampson Jones, of Richmond. The above reward will be given, if lodged in jail. ly 4--1w* J. W. Satterwhite.
d by all the bridges that is required. Four days of hot weather had dried the roads and rendered the ground everywhere reasonably practicable for artillery, though the heavy rains had seriously damaged the condition of things in this respect. But unless some new obstacle intervenes, I feel quite confident that the present week will witness a decisive trial of strength between the opposing armies. It may possibly be postponed a little longer to insure the co-operation of gunboats on the James river, and the arrival of expected reinforcements; but I think not. The enemy evidently suppose that Burnside is to advance upon Petersburg from the direction of Suffolk, for we have a report to-day that they have destroyed the railroad between those two points. But whatever may be the fact about Burnside's movements. I do not believe that McClellan will be delayed on account of them. On the result of an attack, whenever made, I do not think anybody in the army entertains a doubt. Its s
