It appears from his paper on Port Hudson that Mr. Elliot commenced immediately to practice one br13 and the day following the army marched to the rear of Port Hudson. Here the engineers found plenty of work in store for t Admiral Farragut's moving a portion of his fleet above Port Hudson before the hour agreed upon, and his signal either not oat . . . to Bayou Sara (May 21), several miles north of Port Hudson. From Bayou Sara we marched on the night of May 21 to tnow joined Augur's from the South, and the investment of Port Hudson was complete. On what date Mr. Elliot reported for duty my Corps Staff of Engineers, who suffered severely at Port Hudson, three being killed and one wounded, out of less than a dozen of us in all.
