e and his three friends from Virginia would call again. Mr. Sumner sent immediately for Mr. Wilson; and in the course of the evening three men came to the door, desiring. to see Mr. Sumner alone; but, as he was in company, they left word at the door, that, if they could not have a private interview, they would cut his throat before another night. Messrs. Burlingame and Sherman remained as a guard until the next morning. The friends of Mr. Sumner were much alarmed; and among others G. B. Weston thus wrote to him from Duxbury, Mass., I am ready to shoulder my musket, and march to the Capitol, and there sacrifice my life in defence of free speech and the right. By the foresight of A. B. Johnson, Mr. Sumner's private secretary, a body-guard armed with revolvers was arranged, which attended him, without his knowledge, to and from the Senate-chamber. Prompt to sustain him in his heroic defence of truth, the legislature of Massachusetts passed on the 20th of June these resolutions
ly in want of men to fill up our regiments at the seat of war, as well as to fill up the new regiments. I find, however, that the towns and cities are taking hold nobly, each to get its quota; and I feel confident that Massachusetts will have her contingent filled in advance of any other State. Should a company be raised in Adams, I have no doubt His Excellency would commission officers from that town, if they are qualified for the positions. Let every man take hold and recruit. To G. B. Weston, Duxbury,— I send, as you requested, an enlistment-roll; also, a copy of General Order No. 26. I sincerely hope that no town will cease its efforts until it has its quota enlisted. I feel greatly encouraged to-day. The towns have taken hold of the matter with spirit and liberality; and I feel, that, before the end of the month, we shall have sent forward a large share of the men. When you have yours ready, inform me, and I will send you transportation for them to camp. July 1

ting. Thos. D. Wood, Chairman Selectmen. Westfield. In a number of cases, young men who, prior to their enlisting, spent most of their time in saloons and drinking-houses, have, since their return, obtained steady employment and faithfully pursue their labors. As a general answer I should say that but a very small proportion have been guilty of crime since their return home, that their habits are no worse, and in many instances are far better. H. B. Lewis, Chairman Selectmen. Weston. My own private opinion candidly is, that instead of being contaminated by the scenes of the field and the camp, they are better fitted and qualified to perform the duties of good citizens and members of society than they would have been had they remained at home during the war. Alonzo S. Fiske, Chairman Selectmen. Wenham. As a whole, the service of their country has had a salutary effect upon them, and will make them better men through life. Rufus A. Dodge, Chairman Selectmen
