mmond and the armed transport Lady Gore. The number of prisoners captured on these five vessels was 264. Among the prisoners were ten army officers. Sir James remained inactive in Kingston Harbor Destruction at Sodus Bay. during the remainder of the season, and Chauncey was busied in watching his movements and assisting the army in its descent of the St. Lawrence. He did not, however, sufficiently blockade Kingston Harbor to prevent marine scouts from slipping out and hovering near Wilkinson's flotilla on the St. Lawrence. A British squadron on the lake hovered along its southern shores in the summer of 1813 and seriously interfered with supplies on their way to the American camp on the Niagara. They captured (June 12, 1813) two vessels laden with hospital stores at Eighteen-mile Creek, eastward of the Niagara River. Porter, Moses 1755-1822 Military officer; born in Danvers, Mass., in 1755: was in the battle of Bunker (Breed's) Hill, and many of the prominent battles of the Revolution, and was one of the few old officers selected for the first peace establishment. In 1791 he was promoted to captain, and served under Wayne in 1794. In March, 1812, he was colonel of light artillery, and was distinguished at the capture of Fort George, in May, 1813. He accompanied Wilkinson's army on the St. Lawrence, and in the autumn of 1814 was brevetted brigadier-general, and ordered to the defence of Norfolk, Va. He died in Cambridge, April 14, 1822.

f of the army (March 4, 1791), he moved against the Indians on the Wabash, while so lame from gout that he was carried on a litter. The Indians, encouraged by the defeat of Harmar (October, 1790), had spread terror over the frontier settlements in the Northwestern Territory. In May, 1791, Gen. Charles Scott, of Kentucky, led 800 men, and penetrated to the Wabash country, almost to the present site of Lafayette, Ind., and destroyed several Indian villages. At the beginning of August General Wilkinson, with more than 500 men, pushed into the same region to Tippecanoe and the surrounding prairies, destroyed some villages of Kickapoos, and made his way to the Falls of the Ohio, opposite Louisville. These forays caused the Indians to fight more desperately for their country. Congress then prepared to plant forts in the Northwestern Territory, and in September there were 2,000 troops at Fort Washington, under the immediate Map of the Northwestern Territory. command of Gen. . He defied the menacing officers. When he was exchanged in January, 1813, he laid the matter before the Secretary of War. He pressed the subject upon the attention of Congress. The President was already vested with power to retaliate, but he never had occasion to do so. After his exchange, under General Dearborn, he commanded the advance in the attack on Fort George, May 27, 1813, where he was badly burned by the explosion of the magazine. In the fall he commanded the advance of Wilkinson's army in its descent of the St. Lawrence to attack Montreal. In the spring of 1814 he was made a brigadier-general, established a camp of instruction at Buffalo, and early in July gained a victory over the British at Chippewa (see Chippewa, battle of). Later in the month he fought successfully in the battle of Lundy's Lane (q. v.), where he was seriously wounded in the shoulder, which left one of his arms partially disabled. and Hungerford was confirmed in his seat. Rufus King, of Massachusetts, who voted against the report of the committee, moved, June 14, 1813, that the committee of elections shall in future be designated by lot, etc. ; but the motion was defeated. Similar and unsuccessful attempts were made to change the method of electing this committee in 1838 and 1839. As regards special committees, Mr. Pitkin's efforts failed, April 4, 1810, to have the committee to inquire into the conduct of General Wilkinson appointed by ballot, the vote being 53 ayes to 64 noes. In one case only has the speaker barely escaped from the election of a special committee by the ballots of the members of the House, March 13, 1832, in connection with the appointment of a special committee on the Bank of the United States, Mr. Stevenson being speaker. The House, after a long debate, voted by 101 yeas to 99 nays on a motion by Erastus Root that the committee shall be appointed by ballot. Before the result was

On Oct. 21 Governor Blount was asked for 1,500 volunteers to be sent to New Orleans to reinforce Wilkinson, and he made a requisition upon Jackson for that number. The latter immediately entered upon that military career which rendered his name famous. On Dec. 10, ws all British influence. Jackson was then forty-six years of age. The troops, after many hardships, reached Natchez and disembarked, when they met an order from Wilkinson to halt there and await further orders, as he had no instructions concerning their employment; nor had he quarters for their accommodation. After the cession of Louisiana to the United States a controversy arose about its western boundary, which was amicably settled, in 1806, by General Wilkinson and the Spanish commander, establishing the territory between the Sabine River and Arroya Honda as neutral ground. In 1806 revolutionary movements, incited by those of Aaron Burr (q. v.), began in that region, and many skirmishes and battles occurred, chiefly by invasions of Americans.
