ranville Montelic deposed: On Sunday, 21st June, Curry came to my house and invited me to go with him to Manchester. We went, and on our return to Richmond rode down to the market to get something to drink. After taking several drinks Jones and Wyatt challenged for a game of cards. Allen and myself played with them. I lost $1,400, then pledged my watch for $200 and lost that. Curry and myself went home, got money, came back, and I beat Jones out of $2,100, all the money he could raise. Ity minutes Curry got on his horse and rode off, remarking to Peasley that he would see him the next morning and make all right; Curry said that all he minded was the black eye; the parties appeared to be entirely friendly when they parted. Ro. C. Wyatt testified that on the morning of the 21st of June, Montelle and Curry came to Anderson's saloon, on 17th street, and went from there to Manchester. Shortly after they returned, and Montelle proposed a game of cards. We played, and Jones and
d by what Mr. Tyler would say. Davis then asked Mr. T. to count it, and that gentleman decided that the face of the notes represented $20. Davis then took the notes and threw them towards Staples, whereupon he picked them up and tore them to pieces, remarking at the same time that if Mr. D. desired to take advantage of him, he (S) could not help himself. Jackson, a free negro, was charged with assaulting and attempting to kill Patrick Tierney with an axe. The complainant falling to appear, the case was continued. The charge against Jordan, slave of R. O. Gary, of stealing two pairs of shoes, not being sustained, he was discharged. The charge against Robert C. Wyatt, of buying shad in the Second Market to sell again, not being proven, the accused was discharged. Vincent Lucas was fined $5 for permitting his son to engage in a rock battle in the street.
