parture of General Johnston to the neighborhood of Green river, and the aggregation of Federal forces there together with the order for no more passports to be granted for the present to that region, create the impression that we are on the eve of hard fighting there. Notwithstanding these indications, I am still of opinion, as expressed before, that no decisive or great battle will be fought on that line. The two armies there will checkmate each other, while the great battle will be in the region of, or approaching, Lexington. Appropos to this view of the campaign, I hear that General Humphrey Marshall is at West Liberty, in Morgan county, about 80 miles from Lexington, with a large and constantly increasing force on his way to Lexington, and that Zollicoffer is at Somerset, advancing in the same direction, Here, then, in the central, populous portion of Kentucky, on the direct route to Lexington and Frankfort, I think the great battle, or battles, will be fought.
