The members of the 5th Battery were mustered into the U. S. service during September, October and November of 1861, and the organization went into camp at Readville, Mass., Nov. 14, 1861; the muster of the battery being completed December 10, it remained there until December 25 when it went to Washington, D. C., and on February 13 moved to Hall's Hill, Va., and encamped there during the remainder of the winter.
On the 4th of April it went forward to take part in the siege of Yorktown, Va., and was engaged on that day at Howard's Mills.
It remained encamped in the vicinity until the evacuation of the tow
