faithfully to the end. Brigadier-General J. C. Tappan Brigadier-General J. C. Tappan supported the action of his State by promptly offering his military service. It was in the month of May, 1861, that Arkansas passed her ordinance of secession, and in that same month the Thirteenth Arkansas was organized, with J. C. Tappan as its colonel. This force was sent to the army under Gen. Leonidas Polk, and was stationed at Belmont in a brigade commanded by Gideon J. Pillow. On the 7th of November, 1861, General Grant attacked the Confederate army at Belmont, intending to destroy their camp and capture its defenders. At first Grant was successful, but was finally repulsed, barely escaping by the aid of his gunboats. On this occasion Colonel Tappan had posted his regiment in a most advantageous position for repelling the enemy's attack, but his plan was altered by General Pillow, and this proved to be a mistake which came near losing the battle.
