est difficulty its members can be brought together again to operate in a body.--To remedy this evil, and at the same time to provide effectually for the wounded, many of the European armies have "Infirmary companies" attached, whose special duty it is to attend to the wounded during battle, to bear them to the hospital, to staunch the flow of blood when it is profuse and dangerous, and to render such assistance on the field as becomes necessary to preserve life or relieve pain. The army of Bavaria has two of these companies, maintained at an expense of nearly two million florins per annum.--The corps is stationed a short distance in the rear of the line of battle, each man carrying a few simple instruments, canteens of wine and water, rolls of bandage, sponge, and charple. They have the general charge of ambulances, stretchers, medical and dispensary stores.
