False pretences. --James M. D. Irvin, a lad, appeared before the Mayor yesterday to answer the charge of forgery and obtaining money of the C. S. Government under false pretences. On the 25th of November last Irvin called at the office of Capt. John H. Wayt, Paymaster for the commutation of rations, and presented a bill and descriptive roll for George W. Finley, amounting to $103.20, representing himself as Finley.--Capt. Wayt paid him the money, when Irvin signed the receipt as George W. Finley. The next day Irvin again called at Capt. Wayt's office with similar papers, purporting to be for F. M. Bennett, company B, 44th Virginia regiment, and presenting a power of attorney for George W. Finley to receive his pay, attempted to collect the money claimed.--The order being informal, Captain Wayt declined to pay it, and on comparing the signatures discovered that that of Colonel Leroy Brown's was a forgery.
