larm speedily given. When the firemen reached the scene they found that the goods on every floor were on fire, and, forcing the door, set to work earnestly to check and subdue the flames. So dense was the smoke that it was almost impossible for the firemen to exist in it, yet they continued their labors and finally subdued the flames, but not until the building was completely gutted and the tin roof had fallen in. Adjoining this building on the south was the commission house of Mr. Wm. H. Pleasants, which was saved, together with its contents.
