Harboring deserters. --Matthew, Susan, Harriet and Willis Barber, residents of Pittsylvania county, Virginia, were committed to Castle Thunder on Sunday night last upon the charge of harboring Confederate deserters. The list embraces father, mother and two daughters. Each of the latter had with them whopping babies, only a few weeks old; and when asked where were their husbands, replied, with the utmost coolness, that they had never been married. The senior Barbers are apparently about seventy-odd years old, each; and from their conversation, it is very doubtful whether they ever heard of a dictionary or an English grammar. Their place, it is said, has been a regular rendezvous for every loafing Confederate soldier who happened in the neighborhood, and the citizens adjacent were much pleased when the arrests were made.
