Maury. There are but a few bales of cotton in Mobile, and this is owned principally by the rebel Government. No citizen has been allowed to purchase cotton and bring it into the city. In cases where this course has been pursued by private parties, their property has been seized and confiscated. This looks as if the rebels did not have very strong hopes of holding the city. In case of evacuation, they do not think it prudent to leave the cotton after them for the benefit of Uncle Sam. Our news from Mobile dates on the 8th of January. From reports which reached us on Monday last, it would appear that the city was evacuated on or previous to the 16th of January. The ordnance, ammunition, provisions, &c., were being transported to Selma, and the inhabitants were fleeing for their lives in order to escape the wholesale conscription then going on. This report, our informant says, might be true, although there was no indication of a surrender or evacuation up to the 8th.
