Johnson, Rossiter 1840-
Author and editor; born in Rochester, N. Y., Jan. 27, 1840; graduated at the University of Rochester in 1863.
In 1864-68 he was an associate editor of the Rochester Democrat; in 1869-72 was editor of the Concord (N. H.) Statesman; and in 1873-77 was an associate editor of the American Cyclopaedia.
In 1879-80 he assisted Sydney Howard Gay in preparing the last two volumes of the Bryant and Gay History of the United States.
Since 1883 he has been the sole editor of Appleton's annual Cyclopaedia.
He edited The authorized history of the world's Columbian Exposition (4 vols., 1898) ; and The world's Great books (1898-1901). He is also an associate editor of the Standard dictionary. His original books are A history of the War between the United States and Great Britain, 1812-15; A history of the French War, ending in the conquest of Canada; A history of the War of secession (1888; enlarged and illustrated, under the title Camp-fire and battle-field, 1894); T
