On May 15th, the enemy's fleet of five ships of war, among them the Monitor, steamed up the James River, and took position within range of the fort at Drewry's Bluff, and opened fire between eight danger had passed.
On the 16th, my husband rode out to see the works and obstructions in the James River, and upon his return wrote to me as follows:
I returned this evening from a long ride through rain and mud, having gone down the James River to see the works and obstructions on which we rely to stop the gun-boats.
The attack of yesterday has given an impulse to the public, and our us wisdom to see, and valor to execute, the measures necessary to vindicate the just cause.
