2. dig about, cultivate by digging, φυτὰ ς. (as we say to hoe turnips) h.Merc.90, cf. X.Oec. 20.20: metaph., σκάπτει, μοχλεύει θύρετρα digs about them, digs them up, E.HF999.
3. of the result, ς. τάφρον dig a trench, Th. 4.90; ς. βαθεῖαν (sc. τάφρον) Thphr.CP3.20.4; “θεμελίουςLuc.Alex. 10:—Pass., τὰ ἐσκαμμένα,= “σκάμμα11.2, hence, metaph., ὑπὲρ τὰ ἐσκαμμένα ἅλλεσθαι to leap too far, or further than seemed possible, Pl.Cra.413a, cf. Luc.Gall.6, Lib.Ep.438, Or.64.69 (v.l. ὑπὲρ τὸ σκάμμα); cf. “σκάμμα11, ὑποσκάπτω.
