E´CTYPUS

E´CTYPUS (ἔκτυπος), properly an adjective, “formed in a mould” (τύπος, forma), or “wrought in high relief,” thus distinguished from ἀνάγλυφος, “in low relief” [ANAGLYPHA]. Hence (1) the subst. ectypum, a cast in plaster or terra-cotta, which presents the objects in relief (Plin. Nat. 35.152). The accompanying examples are from a terra-cotta and mould in the British Museum. (2) Ectypa gemma (Senec. de Benef. 3.26) or scalptura (Plin. Nat. 37.173), an engraved stone cut in relief, now called a cameo (Rich, s.v. Guhl and Koner, ed. 5, p. 233). [W.W]
