I. trans., scorch, burn up, “πῦρ πόλιν φλεγέθει” Il.17.738:—Pass., “ὄφρα πυρὶ φλεγεθοίατο νεκροί” 23.197.
II. intr., blaze, flare up, “πυρὶ φλεγέθοντι” 21.358, cf. Orph.Fr.194; “πυρσοί τε φλεγέθουσι” Il.18.211; “κεραυνοῦ φλεγέθοντος” Hes.Th.[846]; [“Ἅλιος] λαμπρᾷ στεροπᾷ φλεγέθων” S.Tr.99 (lyr.), cf. E.Ph.169 (lyr.): metaph., blaze forth, shine, A.Supp.88 (lyr.).
