A.foremost man, in Hom. always = πρόμαχος, Il.15.293, Od.11.493, al.; “π. ἀνήρIl.5.533; π. τινί opposed to another in the front rank, 7.75, 116, 22.85: later, generally, chief, A.Ag.200 (lyr.), 410 (lyr.); “Ἀχαιῶν . . πρόμοιId.Eu.399; “γᾶς πρόμοιS.OC884 (lyr.); “στρατιῆς π.AP7.233 (Apollonid.); “ἈθηναίωνE.Tr.31; τῶν Πανελλήνων πρόμῳ Κίμωνι prob. in Cratin.1; πάντων θεῶν θεὸς π., of the sun, S.OT660 (lyr.), cf. Epigr.Gr.361 (Phrygia); ἰατρῶν π. prob. ib.352 (Claudiopolis). The forms πρόμνος , A.Supp.904 (lyr.), and πράμος , Ar.Th.50, are corrupt.
