τήβεννα , , also τήβεννος , , D.H.3.61, Plu.Rom.26, Cor.9, etc., = Lat.
A.toga (incl. its varieties the trabea, etc.), Inscr.Délos 1442 B34 (ii B.C.), Plb.10.4.8, D.H.2.70, 3.61, 5.47, 6.13, D.S.5.40; worn by Antiochus Epiphanes, Plb.26.1A.2, Ptol.Euerg.3 J.: said to be derived from Τήμενος (“ΤήβεννοςSuid.) the Arcadian, Artem.2.3, cf. Poll.7.61 (where τηβεννίς is prob. cj. for τημενίς); but D.H.3.61 expressly doubts its Hellenic origin. (The form of the word, and the context in D.H. l.c., suggest that it is Etruscan, but K. O. Müller's conjecture Τυρρηνοί for τύραννοι in EM756.26 is doubtful.)
