χήν , ὁ and ἡ, Dor. χάν (q.v.), gen. χηνός: Ion. gen. pl. χηνῶν (not χηνέων) Hdt.2.45; irreg. acc. pl.
A.“χένας” AP7.546:—wild goose, Anser cinereus, “χηνῶν ἢ γεράνων ἢ κύκνων” Il.2.460; “χ. πλατυγίζων καὶ κεχηνώς” Eub.115, cf. Arist.HA593b22; “εἰ μὴ σὺ χηνὸς ἧπαρ ἢ ψυχὴν ἔχεις” Eub.101.
2. tame goose, “χῆν᾽ ἥρπαξ᾽ ἀτιταλλομένην ἐνὶ οἴκῳ” Od.15.174, cf. 161; “χῆνές μοι κατὰ οἶκον ἐείκοσι πυρὸν ἔδουσιν” 19.536; “χ. τιθασός” S.Fr.866; ὥσπερ χῆνα σιτευτὸν . . ἔτρεφέ με Epigen.2; γάλακτι χηνός, of an unknown luxury, Eub.90.5; “ἥπατα χηνῶν” Plu.2.965a.
3. νὴ or μὰ τὸν χῆνα was Socrates' oath, Ar.Av.521 (anap., ubi v. Sch.), Cratin.231, Zen.5.81. (Cf. Skt. haṃsás, Lith. žąsìs, OHG. gans, all = goose.）
