A.any thick liquid substance, of various consistency, πελανῷ with oil, A.Ag.96 (anap.) ; ῥοφεῖν ἐρυθρὸν ἐκ μελέων π. the red blood, Id.Eu.265 (lyr.) ; π. αἱματοσταγής a reeking mass of slaughter, Id.Pers.816 ; π. αἱματηρός, of clotted blood, E.Alc.851, Rh.430 ; ἀφρώδης π., of foam at the mouth, Id.Or.220 ; π. μελίσσης honey, Id.Fr.467.5 ; πιαλέοι π., of gum in the eyes, Heliod. ap. Stob.4.36.8.
II. mixture offered to the gods and the dead, of meal, honey, and oil, liquid enough to be poured, “χέουσα τόνδε π. ἐν τύμβῳ πατρός” A. Ch.92 ; “χοὴν π. τε” E.Fr. 912 (anap.) ; burnt on the altar, Id.Ion707 (lyr.), Tr.1063 (pl., lyr.), Ar.Pl.661, etc.; “θῦσαι πελανόν” A.Pers.204, E.Ion 226 (anap.), cf. Pl.Lg. 782c, IG12.76.36, 22.140 ; “ἐς τὴν τρώγλην τὸν π. ἔνθες τοῦ δράκοντος” Herod.4.91.
2. meal made from barley and wheat, of which this mixture was made, “π. καλοῦμεν ἡμεῖς οἱ θεοί, ἃ καλεῖτε . . ἄλφιθ᾽ ὑμεῖς οἱ βροτοί” Sannyr.1 ; “μύλης πελανοί” A.R.1.1077.
III. round cakes offered to the gods, “πέμματα ἐπιχώρια . . , ἃ πελανοὺς καλοῦσιν ἔτι και ἐς ἡμᾶς Ἀθηναῖοι” Paus.8.2.3 : hence (from the shape),
