I.a tragedy, invented by the Dorians, and at first of lyric character (τραγικοὶ χοροί Hdt.); then transplanted to Athens, where it assumed its dramatic form, Ar., etc. Its proper sense is goat-song, because in early times a goat was the prize, or because the actors were clothed in goat-skins.
