Astynŏmi

ἀστυνόμοι). The title of ten officers at Athens drawn annually by lot from the ten tribes, five for the city and five for the Piraeus. They formed a kind of city police, responsible for the cleanliness and order of the streets, and probably for the safety of the public buildings. See Böckh, Publ. Economy of Athens, p. 203 foll.
