Marea
(
Μάρεια, Μαρία, Μαρέη). A town of Lower Egypt, which
gave its name to the district and lake of Mareotis. The lake was separated from the
Mediterranean by the neck of land on which Alexandria stood, and supplied with water by the
Canopic branch of the Nile and by canals. It served as the port of Alexandria for vessels
navigating the Nile.
