Panaenus
(
Πάναινος). A distinguished Athenian painter, who
flourished B.C. 448. He was the nephew of Phidias, whom he assisted in decorating the Temple
of Zeus at Olympia. He was also the author of a series of paintings, of the battle of
Marathon, in the Stoa Poecilé at Athens (Pausan. v. 11, 5).
