Pelōris
(
Πελωρίς),
Pelorias (
Πελωριάς), or
Pelorus (
Πελωρός). Now Cape Faro. The northeast point of Sicily and one of the three
promontories which formed the triangular figure of the island. According to the usual story,
it derived its name from Pelorus, the pilot of Hannibal's ship (Val. Max. ix. 8, 1); but the
name was more ancient than Hannibal's time, being mentioned by Thucydides (iv. 25).
