ACROPOD´IUM

ACROPOD´IUM (ἀκροπόδιον). The only passage of an ancient author where the word occurs is in Hyg. Fab. 88, where a sword is said to be hidden sub acropodio Minervae. This

is almost certainly a low pedestal a little off the ground, like those here figured from the Neapolitan and British Museums. The explanation in the new edition of Stephens's Thesaurus, s. v. ἀκροπόδιον, that it is equivalent to ἄκροι πόδες, the toes of the statue itself, is much less satisfactory. [W.W]
