FOENICULA´RIUS CAMPUS

FOENICULA´RIUS CAMPUS (τὸ Μαραθῶνος πέδιον), a large plain in the neighbourhood of Tarraco, in Spain, so called from the quantity of fennel (μάραθρον, Dor. and Att. μάραθον, Lat. foeniculum1) which grew there. The plain was traversed by the great Roman road from the Pyrenees to Tarraco. (Strab. iii. p.160; Cic. Att. 12.8)

[P.S]

1 There can be little doubt that the name of the far more celebrated Marathon had the same origin.
