FOENICULA´RIUS CAMPUS

FOENICULA´RIUS CAMPUS (τὸ Μαραθῶνος πέδιον), a large plain in the neighbourhood of Tarraco, in Spain, so called from the quantity of fennel (μάραθρον, Dor. and Att. μάραθον, Lat. foeniculum¹) which grew there. The plain was traversed by the great Roman road from the Pyrenees to Tarraco. (Strab. iii. p.160; Cic. Att. 12.8)

1 There can be little doubt that the name of the far more celebrated Marathon had the same origin.
